Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ lbs ground beef (or ground turkey)
- 1 medium onion (chopped)
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 5–6 medium russet potatoes (thinly sliced, about 1/8 inch)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella (optional)
- 1 10.5 oz can cream of mushroom soup (or cream of chicken)
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp paprika (optional)
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for greasing the dish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with olive oil or butter.
- In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with the chopped onion until fully cooked. Drain any excess fat.
- Stir in the minced garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika, cooking for an additional minute until fragrant.
- In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and the cup of milk until smooth.
- Layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes at the bottom of the greased dish. Spread half of the beef mixture over this layer, followed by half of the creamy sauce and sprinkle on a cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
- Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, beef, and sauce. Top with the rest of the cheddar cheese and optional mozzarella.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 15–20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- Let rest for about 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider adding sautéed bell peppers or mushrooms to the mixture. You can also use sweet potatoes for a nutritious twist.
