A luxurious twist on traditional French toast with a rich custard and caramelized sugar topping.

  • Total Time: 155 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of French bread
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (for caramelizing)
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the French bread into thick slices and arrange them in a greased baking dish in a single layer.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until fully combined and slightly frothy.
  3. Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, ensuring each piece is generously coated. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) while the bread is soaking.
  5. Remove from the fridge and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is puffed and golden brown.
  6. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the top and use a kitchen torch to caramelize until golden and crispy.
  7. Serve warm, optionally adding fresh berries or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

For best results, use slightly stale bread and ensure to refrigerate to enhance flavors.
