Ingredients

  • Firm tofu: 400 grams (14 oz)
  • Honey: 4 tablespoons (or maple syrup for a vegan option)
  • Garlic: 4 cloves, minced
  • Soy sauce: 3 tablespoons
  • Cornstarch: 1/2 cup
  • Sesame oil: 2 tablespoons
  • Green onions: 2, chopped
  • Sesame seeds: 2 tablespoons
  • Vegetable oil: for frying (about 1 cup)

Instructions

  1. Drain the firm tofu and press it to remove excess moisture for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Cut the tofu into uniform bite-sized cubes (about one-inch pieces).
  3. In a small bowl, mix together honey, minced garlic, soy sauce, and sesame oil to create the sauce.
  4. Coat each tofu cube generously in cornstarch.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  6. Carefully add tofu cubes, frying until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  7. Remove tofu and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  8. Return the skillet to medium heat, pour honey garlic sauce, and simmer for about a minute.
  9. Gently toss the crispy tofu in the sauce, coating it evenly.

Notes

For an extra flavor boost, marinate the pressed tofu in soy sauce for 30 minutes before coating in cornstarch.
