Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 large eggs (room temperature)
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup softened butter (for frosting)
- 4 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
- 8 ounces cream cheese (softened, for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease three round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Slowly pour this mixture into the dry ingredients, gently folding until just combined.
- Divide the batter into three equal portions. Mix melted chocolate into one portion, pureed strawberries into another, and keep the last one as plain vanilla.
- Pour each flavored batter into its prepared pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the layers to cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.
- For the frosting, whip together the softened cream cheese and butter until creamy. Gradually add in the powdered sugar until it reaches a smooth consistency.
- Frost between the layers with the cream cheese frosting. Finish by frosting the top and sides of the cake generously.
Notes
Store leftover cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week or freeze individual slices wrapped appropriately.
