Creepy yet delicious, these Ghoulish Spiderweb Deviled Eggs are the perfect spooky appetizer for your Halloween spread.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 12 deviled egg halves 1x

Ingredients

Scale

6 large eggs

1 to 2 cups of water

1 teaspoon black food coloring gel

1 tablespoon white vinegar

3 tablespoons mayonnaise

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

A pinch of kosher salt

A pinch of freshly ground black pepper

Optional Garnish: smoked paprika, black sesame seeds, finely chopped chives

Instructions

1. After hard-boiling and cooling the eggs, gently tap them with the back of a spoon to create fine cracks on the shells, but do not peel them.

2. In a sealable container or a deep bowl, mix the water and black food coloring gel until it is dark and well combined.

3. Place the cracked eggs into the coloring solution, ensuring they are fully submerged.

4. Cover the container and refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or overnight for a more dramatic effect.

5. Remove the eggs from the liquid, rinse them with cool water, and add a splash of white vinegar to help set the color.

6. Carefully peel the eggs to reveal the spiderweb pattern.

7. Slice the eggs in half lengthwise and scoop the yolks into a mixing bowl.

8. Mash the yolks until they are finely crumbled.

9. Add the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, kosher salt, and black pepper to the yolks and mix until the filling is smooth and creamy.

10. For a spookier look, you can add a drop of green or purple food coloring to the yolk mixture.

11. Spoon or pipe the yolk filling back into the cavities of the egg whites.

12. Garnish with smoked paprika, black sesame seeds, or chopped chives before serving chilled.

Notes

For the best spiderweb effect, refrigerate the eggs in the dye overnight.

Use a piping bag with a star tip for neater filling.

Great make-ahead appetizer—prepare the eggs a day in advance and fill just before serving.
